Perched high above the Columbia River in Washington’s Horse Heaven Hills AVA, Discovery Vineyard is a site shaped by family stewardship, meticulous farming, and a deep respect for the land. First planted in 2005 by Paul Champoux for Milo and Kay May, Discovery Vineyard has evolved into one of the region’s influential vineyard properties.
The 110-acre site is planted to 55 acres of wine grapes along steep south facing slopes at roughly 300’ to 800’ elevation. The site’s aspect and consistent airflow create an ideal environment for premium winegrowing, while the nearby Columbia River moderates temperatures and helps protect vines from frost and heat extremes. Beneath the vines, layers of loess over fractured basalt provide excellent drainage and contribute to the structure and concentration for which the vineyard has become known.
Today, the vineyard is guided by second-generation grower Oliver May, whose background in soil science and viticulture informs a thoughtful, hands-on approach to farming. Every step in the vineyard — pruning, shoot thinning, fruit thinning, and harvest — is completed by hand, allowing for precise vineyard management and close attention to fruit quality throughout the growing season.
Though Cabernet Sauvignon remains the vineyard’s flagship variety, Discovery also cultivates Merlot, Cab Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Syrah producing fruit that contributes depth and character to Bordeaux-style blends. Wines sourced from the site are recognized for their plush aromatics, balanced acidity, and layered structure — characteristics that have made Discovery Vineyard a valued partner for premium Washington wine producers.
Sustainability remains central to the vineyard’s philosophy. As a family-run operation, Discovery emphasizes small-scale farming practices designed to preserve soil health, vineyard longevity, and the natural expression of the site itself. The result is fruit that consistently reflects both the distinctive terroir of Horse Heaven Hills and the dedication of the growers behind it.
