Sustainable WA – Year in Review
From Nathanial Helligso, Program & Operations Manager
It feels almost unreal that I only stepped into the role of Sustainable WA Program Manager in March. In that short time, we hired a new auditor, completed 2025 signups, conducted audits, worked through corrective actions, and are now entering final review for certification. It’s been a whirlwind year.
Through all of it, I’ve been continually impressed and inspired by the strength, resilience, and determination of the growers I’ve met. This is an industry built by people who don’t quit, who adapt when circumstances demand it, and who keep showing up even when the work is heavy. I’ve been welcomed with patience and open arms as I found my footing, and that generosity has meant more than I can express.
I want to extend special thanks to our Governance Council: Adam Ramirez, Jean Dodson-Peterson, Sadie Drury, Wade Wolfe, Ryan Flanagan, and Patrick Rawn. Adam—and especially Patrick—have gone above and beyond in offering their expertise and guidance to help strengthen our processes and improve the grower experience. All of their commitment to this program is a big part of why it continues to move forward.
The Washington Wine Commission has also been a terrific partner. Heather Bradshaw and Mackenzie Pederson bring humor and positivity to every conversation, and working with them has been a highlight of my year.
Our new auditor, Heather Muser, has been exceptional. Her knowledge, passion, and professionalism have elevated the program, and we are incredibly fortunate to have her as part of the team.
I also want to acknowledge Sara Higgins, Executive Director of the Washington Winegrowers Association. Sara has been an advocate, guide, partner, and friend throughout this entire process. Whether offering strategic direction, troubleshooting challenges, or bringing her signature (and sometimes relentless) enthusiasm to every discussion, she has been instrumental in helping me navigate this role. I truly could not have done this without her determination and support.
And finally, I want to thank all of you—our growers. Whether riding through vineyards with Marshall Edwards, learning from José Licea, or receiving a masterclass in viticulture from Dick Boushey, I’ve been humbled by the willingness of this community to teach, share, and support.
Next year may bring its own challenges—we’re not through the storm yet—but I’m optimistic because of the strength of this community. I’m grateful for all of you, and I’m committed to ensuring Sustainable WA continues to support, represent, and uplift the growers who make this program possible.
Thank you for everything you’ve done this year. I’m looking forward to what we’ll build together in 2026
