Meet a Grower Member: Red Willow Vineyard

Nestled at the far western edge of the Yakima Valley AVA, Red Willow Vineyard stands as one of Washington State’s true pioneers in premium grape growing. Established in 1971 on land that had been part of a multi-generation family farm, the vineyard is the result of decades of innovation, dedication, and deep respect for the land.

The story begins on the historic Stephenson family farm, where Clyde Stephenson grew potatoes and alfalfa in the 1920s. When Mike Sauer married into the family, he recognized the untapped potential of the steep, rocky hillsides that challenged other crops. With guidance from Walter Clore of Washington State University, Sauer planted the vineyard’s first Cabernet Sauvignon block in 1973.

Red Willow’s terroir is as distinctive as its history. Perched between 1,100 and 1,300 feet above sea level on the south-facing slopes of Ahtanum Ridge, the site avoids deep floodplain soils in favor of ancient, well-draining ground ideally suited for viticulture. The arid climate and rugged terrain consistently yield grapes with powerful structure, intense flavor, and a pronounced sense of place.

Over the years, the vineyard has played a central role in shaping Washington’s wine identity. Through a close collaboration with pioneering MW/winemaker David Lake, Red Willow helped introduce varieties such as Syrah, Cabernet Franc, and Viognier to the region, placing it at the forefront of viticultural innovation.

A defining symbol of the site is the stone Chapel built atop one of the vineyard’s hills—a quiet tribute to tradition and the family’s enduring connection to the land. Today, Red Willow supplies fruit to more than 40 respected wineries across Washington and Oregon and remains firmly family-run. Mike Sauer’s sons, Daniel and Jonathan, along with son-in-law Rick Willsey, now help guide vineyard management, bringing fresh energy while honoring decades of hard-earned knowledge. With grandchildren already learning the craft, four generations are rooted in the soil and a fifth is beginning to bloom—ensuring Red Willow Vineyard’s legacy of stewardship and exceptional grape growing continues well into the future.
