Strengthening the Sustainable WA Standard: The Role of the Technical Committee
The Sustainable WA Technical Committee plays a critical role in ensuring that the Sustainable WA Standard remains rigorous, science-based, and practical for growers across Washington. This committee brings together a diverse group of professionals from across the wine industry and related sectors, all committed to improving the sustainability, integrity, and relevance of the program.
What the Technical Committee Does
The committee meets regularly to evaluate and revise the Sustainable WA Standard. Its work includes:
- Reviewing new scientific research, field practices, and regulatory changes
- Identifying gaps or inconsistencies in the Standard
- Ensuring the feasibility and applicability of practices for Washington vineyards
- Providing recommendations for changes or clarifications
- Collaborating across disciplines (e.g., viticulture, entomology, water management) to assess the impact and effectiveness of sustainability criteria
Members break out into topic-specific working groups based on their area of expertise to evaluate flagged issues, develop proposals, and then reconvene as a full committee to ensure well-rounded and practical updates.
Why It Matters
A strong Technical Committee ensures the Standard stays ahead of industry needs, aligns with environmental stewardship, and reflects the realities of vineyard operations in Washington. The committee is comprised of academics, researchers and growers of small and large vineyards across Washington State. Their work gives growers confidence in the value and credibility of certification, supports market integrity, and ensures the program remains adaptable, transparent, and science-driven.

- Soil science and fertility management
- Ecosystem services / Pollinator and beneficial insect conservation
- Water use efficiency and irrigation design
- Viticulture / Vineyard operations (including small- and mid-size growers)
- Pesticide regulation and IPM
- Regulatory compliance (WSDA, L&I, EPA)
- Sustainability frameworks or third-party certification
- Climate adaptation / Drought & smoke resilience
This is a great opportunity to help shape the future of Washington winegrape farming and ensure the Standard reflects the best thinking from across disciplines.
