Sustainable WA: Growing Forward in 2025

A New Chapter in Auditing: Welcoming Heather Muser

This year, the Sustainable WA program introduces a new auditing partner: Heather Muser, Ed.D., of Muser Consulting LLC. With more than a decade of experience in regulatory compliance and sustainability programs—including GlobalG.A.P., Organic (NOP), California Certified Sustainable (CCSW), Lodi Rules, Bloom Check, and others—Muser brings both breadth and depth to her role.

Her academic background, which includes a doctorate in Educational Leadership from CSU Stanislaus and a master’s in Applied and Professional Ethics from the University of Maryland, complements a professional career that spans from microbiology technician to Quality Control Manager for The Wine Group. This unique blend of hands-on experience and academic rigor positions Muser as a strong asset to the Sustainable WA community.

Muser’s addition also marks a transition. For the past three years, Eagle Certification Group has played a foundational role in supporting the program’s auditing needs. Their work has been deeply appreciated, and the program moves forward with gratitude for their contributions and commitment to Washington’s winegrowing standards.

Certification Timeline: What to Expect for 2025

The 2025 certification season follows a familiar cadence, with some new efficiencies and benefits designed to make the process more intuitive, accessible, and useful:

•           May 15 – Deadline for completing self-assessments and scheduling audits

•           May 16 to September 1 – Audit window (remote or in-person)

•           November 15 – Deadline for submitting post-harvest data and finalizing corrective actions

•           December – Certified growers receive their final certification

These deadlines serve not only as logistical anchors but also as reminders of the program’s commitment to accountability, transparency, and the seasonal rhythms of agriculture.

Updates Shaped by YOU!

In response to feedback from growers and auditors alike, several key improvements have been rolled out for the 2025 season:

  • Audit Alignment with Salmon-Safe Standards – Reflecting revised criteria to streamline dual certification
  • Streamlined Renewal Process – Previous responses are now auto-filled in the self-assessment system
  • Simplified Terms & Conditions – Digital acknowledgment replaces the need for uploaded signatures
  • Integrated Payment Platform – Centralized payment and receipt system to ease administration
  • Online Logo Use Application – Accessible directly through the Sustainable WA website
  • Automated Certification Reports – Issued automatically upon auditor approval

These enhancements are part of an ongoing effort to modernize the certification experience while staying grounded in rigorous, science-based standards.

New Leadership, Continued Mission

Sustainable WA also welcomes Nathanial Helligso as the new Program Manager. With a professional background in organizational leadership and organizational development, Nathanial steps into the role with a focus on strategic growth and enhanced support for growers navigating the certification process. His leadership aims to ensure the program not only maintains its integrity but also remains responsive and adaptable in a rapidly changing agricultural landscape.

As Sustainable WA continues to evolve, its core mission remains unchanged: to support and recognize viticultural practices that are environmentally sound, socially responsible, and economically viable. Through collaboration, innovation, and shared commitment, the program reflects the strength and sustainability of Washington’s winegrowing community.
